Mission of the Fundo de Garantia de Depósitos (Deposit Guarantee Fund)
The Fundo de Garantia de Depósitos (Deposit Guarantee Fund) was established by the Legal Framework of Credit Institutions and Financial Companies, approved by the Decree-Law No. 298/92, of 31 December. The Fund is a public-law legal person, with administrative and financial autonomy, has its head Office in Lisbon, on the premises of Banco de Portugal.
Its principal mission is to compensate depositors of a credit institution authorised to take deposits, which can no longer meet its liabilities, under certain conditions, notably up to a limit of 100,000 euros per depositor.
The Fund can also co-operate, on a temporary basis, in actions intended to restore the solvency and liquidity conditions of member institutions, within a financial reorganisation plan conducted by the Banco de Portugal.
Its engagement, in coordination with the supervisory authority, represents a security and a stabilisation measure for the banking system, in particular as an instrument for protection of small depositors.
